Project Spotlight: Zion Way
Welcome to another exciting edition of our Project Spotlight series, where we delve into remarkable transformations that elevate spaces from ordinary to extraordinary. Today, we’re thrilled to present the stunning renovation of Zion Way. A kitchen remodel that perfectly encapsulates the essence of modern design while maintaining impeccable functionality. Join us as we explore the journey from the ‘Before’ stage to the final reveal, highlighting the strategies that brought this project to life.
Before: A Dark Beginning
The original kitchen at Zion Way was a testament to the classic, albeit outdated, design trends of its time. The space was dominated by dark brown stained cabinets featuring flat panel doors adorned with decorative detailing. These cabinets, paired with matching drawer fronts, created a sense of uniformity but lacked the brightness and energy that contemporary kitchens demand. The countertops, crafted from dark granite, further contributed to the somber, enclosed atmosphere.

While these elements once exuded elegance, the homeowners sought a fresh and invigorating transformation. The goal was to shift from a traditional, subdued aesthetic to a lively, inviting environment that not only met modern standards but also enhanced the kitchen’s functionality.
Selections: A Palette of Possibilities
The transformation at Zion Way began with meticulous selections that redefined the kitchen’s aesthetic and functionality. The cabinetry choices were pivotal in achieving the desired look and feel.
Cabinetry:
The new cabinets feature Schrock Entra Full Overlay, which offers a seamless and sophisticated appearance. The Ingalis door style, with its matching drawer fronts, introduces a cohesive and polished look. The perimeter cabinets are coated in a crisp white paint, instantly brightening the space. Meanwhile, the kitchen island, painted in a striking navy hue, adds a bold yet elegant contrast.
Hardware:
Amerock’s choice of hardware is crucial to the overall design, introducing a touch of modernity and flair. The Blackrock Pendant Knobs on the upper portion of the stacked cabinet provide a unique and stylish accent. Throughout the rest of the cabinetry, Blackrock pulls are used, ensuring a consistent look. The perimeter hardware is finished in black bronze, which complements the white cabinetry beautifully. Meanwhile, the island hardware features a golden champagne finish that aligns perfectly with the navy paint, adding a touch of luxury to the space.
Design: A Vision Unfolded
The design phase focused on not just aesthetics but also on enhancing the kitchen’s practicality. The primary goal was to achieve better flow, increase storage, and update the overall layout.
The refrigerator was strategically relocated to a different wall, which freed up space and improved the kitchen’s flow. Tall pantries were introduced flanking the fridge, providing ample storage for groceries and kitchen essentials. To maximize vertical space, the cabinets were stacked to reach the ceiling, creating an illusion of grandeur and spaciousness. The addition of glass in the stacked cabinets by the coffee and wet bar area brings a touch of elegance and allows for display opportunities. A practical trash pull-out system was integrated, enhancing convenience and cleanliness. The island was extended with legs to accommodate a seating area, fostering a space for casual dining and social interaction. Additional drawers were included to ensure optimal organization and accessibility.

Insight from the Designer: A Creative Perspective
Collaborating closely with Sunstate Remodeling (Contractor) and Whyte House Design (Designer) was essential to bringing the Zion Way kitchen remodel to life. Their skill and vision played a crucial role in transforming a dated kitchen into a contemporary masterpiece. Here are a few insights from the Designer.
Could you describe the initial vision you had for the Zion Way kitchen remodel, and how did it evolve throughout the project?
The house was very basic builder finishes and everything was dark and brown. We knew they wanted things lighter and brighter but Nicole wasn’t afraid of a splash of color in the space and bringing in some warm woods that felt modern yet very organic.
Could you elaborate on the decision to use stacked cabinets reaching the ceiling? What impact did this have on the space?
I think this is a no brainer when you have 10’ ceilings. The space isn’t too tall to have them go all the way up and it looks great to do 42” uppers with 18” stacked above that and a beautiful crown moulding at the top to finish if off. That leaves no weird dead space above 🙂
How did you ensure the new kitchen design balanced aesthetics with practicality?
The layout of their kitchen was a pretty functional layout but we helped create more openness when a dividing wall came down from the kitchen to the family room space. This allowed for a larger island with more casual seating and a dining table space that could seat more people but not feel too formal.
What was the inspiration behind the color palette for the Zion Way project?
The goal was to choose finishes that would remain timeless but still freshen up the space. The blue tones are so soothing yet fun and fresh. I think after years of living with brown and dark wood tones they were really ready for that brightness and it was an easy choice to go in the direction of blue/white/light wood tones.
What feedback did you receive from the homeowners about the final result?
They were so happy with the finished product. As a family that hosts a lot of holidays and events with friends, I know they were thrilled when it wrapped up and they could entertain and enjoy the space that is truly the heart of their home
Could you share more about the seating area created at the kitchen island and its intended purpose?
They are a family of 5 with friends that come over a lot. Seating at the island was important but they still were going to have a full dining table in the space. The island is a perfect gathering spot for the kids at breakfast or snack time. I think an island like this is a go to for casual seating on a busy weeknight or anytime friends and family come to visit. Everyone loves sitting at a kitchen island so we needed it to pack a punch.
How did the use of glass in the upper cabinets affect the kitchen’s visual dynamics?
The glass upper cabinets is such a great way to add visual interest and a more open airy feel to the space. I also love that you can showcase beautiful dishware, glassware, or decorative pieces while still keeping them protected from dust. Glass doors can will help break up a long stretch of solid cabinetry, preventing the space from feeling too heavy or closed off.
How do you see the Zion Way kitchen remodel setting trends for future projects?
This project was the epitome of blending classic design with practical features that feel both fresh and functional. We had a natural base that brought in personality with color tones. Smart material choices were a must and every finish was chosen with durability and beauty in mind, which helped us ensure the space not only looks great today but will stand the test of time. We love blending timeless elegance with modern practicality and the Zion Way kitchen remodel is proof that great design doesn’t have to chase trends—it sets them.
What advice would you give to homeowners considering a similar transformation for their kitchen?
I think there are things that go hand in hand—1) know your budget and what your must have items are within the space so it can be functional and beautiful. 2) work with a good contractor that will pay attention to details and bring the designs to life with quality and care. 3) Hire a designer that listens to your needs and helps you create spaces that are thoughtfully designed to create a space you love and want to spend time in.
What was the most rewarding aspect of seeing the Zion Way kitchen project come to fruition?
I have known this family for a long time and I was so thankful that they put their trust in me to help them out. Bringing the 3D designs to life helped us really work together to achieve their goals for the space. They had amazing taste and I was there to help bring it all together for a custom and curated design that felt personal to them but also so appealing and timeless. It was such a rewarding project and I look forward to more projects with their family in the future.
